Slowly we have learnt to live with conditions that were once considered almost fatal. High blood pressure is one such condition. Science and technology has made it a tad easier to monitor our BP, then there are medicines that help keep our blood pressure in check. However, that does not mean you can take this lifestyle disease lightly at any point. High blood pressure occurs when the force of blood against the arteries is too high. The obstructed blood flow could lead to stroke or even death, in absence of necessary intervention. There is still a staggering amount of unawareness as far as high blood pressure is concerned. If your BP levels are constantly over 140/90 mmHg, you must seek a doctor immediately. Also, here are some diet tips you must follow, if you happen to be a high blood pressure patient.
1. Steer clear of excess sodium. Too much salt can lead to water retention in the body which is linked to elevated blood sugar.

2. Consume a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products, this helps keep your heart healthy and BP in check.
3. Try to avoid foods that raise cholesterol like red meat, french fries, butter. It is a good idea to restrict foods rich in saturated fats as well.
4. Boost intake of potassium. Potassium tends to negate the adverse effects of sodium. Some high potassium foods are spinach, sweet potato, tomato.
5. Read labels and maintain a diary of what you are eating everyday. If the label contains terms that are too complex to figure, it is most likely to be unhealthy for your heart. Watch out for sodium content
6. Avoid processed foods like cereals, sausages, tinned or canned food, unless you are very sure of the contents inside
7. Do not eliminate salt all of a sudden. There is no gain in sending your body in a state of shock, cut back on salt but do so gradually.
8. Cut back on caffeine, as it has been linked with raised blood pressure levels. Experts also suggest limiting alcohol intake.
