Vermouth, unlike what is believed, is not a liquor but a type of fortified wine (like wine spiked with brandy), it is often flavoured with botanicals and given a distinct colour. It also has a lower alcohol content of about 15-18%. They are of two types: red or sweet vermouth, which originally comes from Italy, and there is the white or dry vermouth, which is known to hail from France.



You can always drink vermouth straight with an ice cube and a lemon twist but added to a cocktail, this beverage is divine. Here are three cocktails that can elevate the entire game.



Vermouth & Soda

A classic vermouth cocktail, this requires a few ingredients and a couple of minutes to make. This is ideal for a party, and you make use of any variety of vermouth you have on hand. You’ll need 50mL or a little less than two shots, sparkling soda and olives for garnish.


In a glass, add the wine and soda, drop in the olives and a lemon wedge.



 Bronx Cocktail

This is a beautiful drink to enjoy all year round, and it calls for two different types of vermouth. Developed in the roaring 20s, this drink will transport you to another era and please your senses.


To prepare this, you’ll need 50mL of gin, 25mL of dry vermouth and 25mL of sweet vermouth, 25 mL of orange juice and ice. In a cocktail shaker add all the ingredients and shake. Pour in a coupe glass and garnish with an orange peel.



Boulevardier

If you enjoy a Negroni, this drink is for you. The drink calls for 25mL of gin, 25mL of Campari and 25mL of sweet vermouth. Pour all the liquors into a glass, add ice and stir till the glass becomes cold. Serve with the garnish of a lemon peel.
