When Rachel from F.R.I.E.N.D.S botched up the English trifle for Thanksgiving, I wondered, just how unusual are English desserts that she didn’t hesitate once before adding that layer of beef in the middle. Now, after having tasted a couple, I can understand how the English have been rather experimental and progressive with their desserts across history. The most delicate puddings can have a sharp accent that can turn the dish around, at the same time, a super-indulgent cake can have a fluffy and light centre. Here are some of our most beloved English desserts that should be on your bucket list.
English Toffee
Buttery, chewy toffee covered in chocolate sprinkled with nuts, a holiday favourite that you can make anyday with this easy recipe.
Bread And Butter Pudding
A british classic, bread and butter pudding was known to be Princess Diana's favourite. Slices of buttered bread with raisins scattered on top, covered with custard, nutmeg and vanilla. Baked till perfection.
Apple Crumble
It is said that the dessert grew in popularity during the second world war. Due to food rationing, there was a shortage of ingredients to make luxurious desserts like cakes. So things like oats and flour would be crumbled and baked with sliced apple to make this rich-textured dessert.
Strawberry Shortcake Cake
A delish cake, made with biscuit like layers and cream, topped with sweetened strawberries, this dessert is a crowdpuller.
Shrewsbury Biscuits
Delicate but firm biscuits made with flour, butter and milk. A tea-time classic, these biscuits are ideal for those looking for something sweet but also tremedously light.
