The onset of the monsoon season calls for beverages that provide deep comfort and warmth against the damp chill. A caramel macchiato brings together the robust bitterness of fresh espresso and the soothing sweetness of caramelised sugar. Steaming the milk creates a velvety microfoam that holds the rich caramel sauce perfectly on top without sinking. This layered coffee drink offers a beautiful contrast of temperatures and flavours as you sip through the foam. Making it at home allows you to control the sweetness while enjoying the heavy rain outside your window.
1 double shot of freshly brewed espresso 200ml whole milk 1 tablespoon vanilla syrup 2 tablespoons rich caramel sauce A pinch of flaky sea salt
Pour the vanilla syrup into the bottom of your favourite heavy glass or ceramic coffee mug to create the sweet base layer.
Heat the whole milk gently and froth it using a steam wand or a hand frother until a thick, velvety microfoam develops on the surface.
Pour the frothed milk into the mug over the vanilla syrup, leaving a little room at the top for the coffee.
Brew the double shot of espresso and pour it slowly through the centre of the milk foam, then finish by drizzling the caramel sauce in a crosshatch pattern over the top.
