Treacle, a syrup derived from sugar refining, has long been used in British cooking for its deep, slightly bitter sweetness. When added to coffee, it creates a latte that feels richer and more layered than standard sugar-sweetened versions. The presence of molasses also brings trace minerals like iron, making it a more nuanced alternative.
1 cup milk 1 shot espresso or strong coffee 1–2 teaspoons treacle or molasses A pinch of cinnamon optional
Heat milk gently until warm and slightly frothy.
Stir treacle into hot coffee until fully dissolved.
Pour warm milk over the coffee mixture and combine evenly.
Finish with cinnamon if using and serve immediately.
