Cherupayar Curry is a traditional Kerala-style green gram curry filled with nutrients. It is a wholesome staple in many households and pairs perfectly with steamed rice, chapati or even puttu.
1 cup cherupayar, soaked overnight 2 cups water 1 finely chopped onion 2-3 slit green chillies 1 tsp grated ginger 1 chopped tomato 1/2 tsp turmeric powder 1 tsp red chilli powder 1 tsp coriander powder 1/2 tsp garam masala 1/2 cup coconut milk 2 tbsp coconut oil 1 tsp mustard seeds 1 sprig of curry leaves Salt to taste
Pressure cook soaked cherupayar with water and turmeric powder for 2-3 whistles until soft.
Heat coconut oil, splutter mustard seeds, saute curry leaves, add green chillies, ginger, and cook until onions turn golden.
Stir in chilli powder, coriander powder, garam masala, tomatoes and cook until mushy.
Add the cooked green gram along with water, mix well and simmer for 5-7 minutes.
Add coconut milk, adjust salt, cook for another 2 minutes and serve with rice or roti.
