Tadka idli is a quick South Indian teatime snack that can be made with leftover idlis and a few simple spices. It is loved for vibrant flavours and easy preparation, often served with chutney and sambar.
12 idlis (cut into bite-sized pieces) 2 tbsp oil 1 tsp mustard seeds 1 tsp cumin seeds 1 tsp urad dal (optional) 1 tsp chana dal (optional) 2 slit green chillies 1 broken dry red chilli 10–12 curry leaves ½ tsp turmeric powder 1 finely chopped onion 1 finely chopped tomato Salt to taste 1 tbsp coriander leaves for garnish
Cut idlis into bite-sized pieces and set aside.
Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, urad dal, chana dal, let them sizzle and turn golden in colour.
Add green chillies, dry red chilli, curry leaves and saute for a few seconds.
Add onions, saute until translucent, add tomatoes, cook until soft, then mix in turmeric powder and salt.
Add the idli pieces and toss gently to coat them with tadka, spices and cook them for 2-3 minutes on low heat and then serve.
