Button idli is a mini version of our traditional South Indian idli - soft, fluffy, and steamed to perfection. These tiny idlis are perfect for kids, easy to eat, and fun to serve. Whether tossed in ghee, podi, or dipped in sambar, they make a healthy and tasty breakfast or school tiffin option loved by little ones and elders alike.
For Idlis: 1 cup fermented idli batter A few drops of ghee (for greasing) For Tempering (Tadka): 1 tsp ghee ¼ tsp mustard seeds 4-5 chopped curry leaves 1 tbsp grated coconut 1 tbsp finely chopped carrots A pinch of salt A pinch of hing
Grease a mini idli mould with ghee.
If using grated veggies, mix a spoonful into the batter or drop a little into each mould for a colourful base.
Pour batter into the mould and steam for 8-10 minutes on medium flame.
Let it rest for 2 minutes before demoulding.
Heat ghee in a pan, add mustard seeds, curry leaves, hing, and chopped carrots, and sauté for 2 minutes, then add coconut and a pinch of salt.
Add the steamed button idlis to the pan and toss gently to coat with the tempering.
