Shorshe Ilish, the iconic Bengali recipe, is a cherished delicacy known for the delicious taste of Hilsa fish paired with pungent, creamy mustard-based gravy. Here’s the recipe to follow.
For The Fish 6 pieces Hilsa Fish 1 tsp turmeric 1 tsp salt 5 tsp mustard oil 1 tsp nigella seeds ½ cup sliced onion ½ tsp turmeric 1 tsp red chilli powder ¼ cup coconut milk 3 green chillies
For The Mustard Paste 2 tbsp white mustard 1 tbsp black mustard 1 tsp salt 3 green chillies Warm water A pinch of sugar
Start by descaling, washing, and patting the fish dry. Marinate it in turmeric and salt in mustard oil. Keep it aside for 30 minutes.
Soak all the mustard paste ingredients in warm water for 30 minutes. Blend them until a smooth yellow paste is formed.
Heat mustard oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add nigella seeds and onions. Stir frequently until translucent.
Add turmeric and red chilli powder. Mix until the water evaporates.
Add the marinated fish pieces and gently sear on each side for 1-2 minutes.
Add the mustard paste and coat the fish pieces well. Add Coconut milk and green chillies as well.
Cook over a medium-low flame for 15 to 20 minutes.
Remove the skillet from the heat once the gravy reaches the desired consistency and serve immediately.
