Fasting during Sawan 2026 offers the perfect opportunity to experiment with creative vrat approved meals like these unique vegetarian sushi rolls. Swapping traditional sticky rice for cooked samak rice provides a fantastic base that holds together beautifully. Filled with crunchy cucumbers, roasted peanuts, and fresh paneer, and wrapped in edible nori or thin cucumber sheets, this dish brings a refreshing and modern twist to traditional fasting food. It is a light yet filling option that strictly follows all fasting rules while making your meal feel incredibly special.
1 cup samak rice (barnyard millet) 2 cups water 1 cucumber, sliced into thin strips 100g paneer, cut into batons 2 tablespoons roasted peanuts, crushed Nori sheets or thinly sliced cucumber strips for wrapping Sendha namak (rock salt) to taste 1 teaspoon roasted sesame seeds
Wash and cook the samak rice in water with a pinch of sendha namak until soft and sticky, then allow it to cool completely.
Lay a nori sheet or cucumber strips flat on a bamboo rolling mat and spread a thin, even layer of the cooled samak rice over the surface.
Arrange the cucumber strips, paneer batons, and crushed roasted peanuts in a neat line across the centre of the rice.
Roll the mat tightly to form a firm cylinder, slice into bite sized pieces using a sharp wet knife, and garnish with roasted sesame seeds.
