Samosa latkes bring together the Hanukkah tradition of frying potato pancakes with the familiar spice profile of an Indian samosa. Grated potatoes are seasoned with cumin, coriander and chilli, then fried until crisp and deeply golden. Serving them with green chutney and tamarind chutney instead of sour cream gives the dish its viral appeal. They work well as a festive appetiser or as part of a Hanukkah spread.
3 large potatoes, peeled and grated 1 small onion, grated ½ tsp cumin powder ½ tsp coriander powder ¼ tsp red chilli powder Salt to taste 2–3 tbsp flour or matzo meal Oil for shallow frying Green chutney and tamarind chutney, to serve
Squeeze out as much moisture as possible from the grated potatoes and onion using a clean cloth.
Transfer to a bowl and mix with cumin powder, coriander powder, chilli powder, salt and flour until the mixture holds together.
Heat oil in a wide pan, shape the mixture into small flat patties and fry on medium heat until crisp and golden on both sides.
Drain briefly on paper towels and serve hot with chutneys spooned on top.
