The Mint Julep is the definition of Southern hospitality in a glass. It is a deceptively simple cocktail that relies on the marriage of bruised mint and high-quality bourbon. The key is using crushed ice to create a frost on the outside of the glass, which keeps the drink bracingly cold. It’s aromatic, stiff, and perfectly designed for high-humidity afternoons.
60ml Bourbon whiskey 8–10 fresh mint leaves 15ml simple syrup Crushed ice (essential) Extra mint sprig for garnish
Place the mint leaves and simple syrup in a highball glass or traditional silver cup.
Muddle gently, you want to release the aromatic oils without shredding the leaves, which can turn the drink bitter.
Fill the glass halfway with crushed ice and pour in the bourbon. Stir well until the glass begins to frost.
Mound more crushed ice on top (like a snow cone) and garnish with a large, slapped sprig of mint to release its scent as you sip.
