After a long day of fasting during Ramadan, comforting dishes feel extra satisfying, and one of them can be this dahi chicken. Perfect for the iftar spread, soft chicken is simmered in spiced yoghurt gravy in this recipe and paired with warm rotis or steamed rice.

Ingredients

500 g chicken, medium pieces 1 cup thick yoghurt (dahi) 2 tbsp oil 1 large onion, finely sliced 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste 1 tsp turmeric powder 1½ tsp red chilli powder 1 tsp coriander powder ½ tsp garam masala ½ tsp cumin seeds Salt to taste 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves ¼ cup water

Step 1

In a pan, heat oil and add cumin seeds to it. Let it sizzle and add 1 sliced onion and sauté until it turns golden and aromatic.

Step 2

To this, add ginger-garlic paste and cook until you get an aroma from it. Stir everything well so that the paste blends with the onions.

Step 3

To this base, add the chicken pieces, turmeric, red chilli powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix everything so that the chicken is coated with spices evenly.

Step 4

Cook the chicken for about 5 to 6 minutes on medium heat until it turns lightly, you notice it turns golden and begins releasing its juices to the masala.

Step 5

Lower the flame and add a cup of whisked yoghurt slowly and stir continuously. Add half a cup of water and cook slowly to make a smooth, creamy gravy.

Step 6

Sprinkle the garam masala and chopped coriander leaves from the top. Cook for another 5 to 6 minutes until the chicken turns tender and the gravy thickens, then serve.
