Palak Pappu Recipe: South Indian Twist To Spinach Dal

Spinach dal is a healthy dish loaded with protein, vitamins, and minerals. It pairs well with rice and makes for a delicious meal. If you are tired of an old recipe, you can prepare the dish with a South Indian twist. It is called palak pappu.

Ingredients

1.5 cups water ½ cup moong dal ¼ teaspoon cumin and mustard seeds ¼ teaspoon turmeric and asafoetida Salt to taste 4-6 cloves of garlic 7-8 spring leaves 2-3 green and dried red chillies 1 teaspoon coriander 1 teaspoon sambar powder 1 teaspoon ghee 1 chopped onion 1 chopped tomato 3 cups spinach

Step 1

Add soaked moong dal to the pressure cooker and sprinkle turmeric powder and salt to taste. Wait for two whistles to blow off.

Step 2

Heat oil in another pan and let mustard and cumin seeds crackle. Add dried red chillies, green chillies, curry leaves, and asafoetida as well.

Step 3

Add chopped onion and saute. Once onions become translucent, add tomatoes and garlic. Let the ingredients cook for 5-8 minutes on low flame.

Step 4

Add chopped palak to the mix and the remaining spices as well. Sprinkle some water, and close the lid for spices to roast for 5 minutes.

Step 5

Pour the cooked dal into the pan and let it simmer on a medium flame for 5-8 minutes.

Step 6

Serve palak pappu or spinach dal with a dollop of ghee along with rice and roti.
