Old-School Nannari Drink Recipe For Summer Relief

Sweet, earthy, and lightly herbal, this chilled Nannari drink has been South India’s answer to scorching afternoons for generations. Mixed with lemon, ice, and cold water, it feels refreshing from the very first sip.

Ingredients

3 tbsp nannari syrup 1 tbsp lemon juice 1½ cups chilled water Ice cubes as needed Lemon slices for garnish

Step 1

Wash dried nannari roots thoroughly and soak them in water overnight.

Step 2

Next day, boil the soaked roots in the same water for 30-40 minutes until the water reduces slightly and turns deep brown.

Step 3

Strain the liquid and discard the roots.

Step 4

Add sugar (or jaggery) to the strained liquid and heat it on low flame until it thickens into a light syrup consistency.

Step 5

Add lemon juice and cardamom, mix well, and let it cool completely before storing in a clean bottle.
