Navratri 2025 Recipe: No Onion No Garlic Dhokla For Fasting Days

Dhokla without onion and garlic is light, fluffy, and ideal for Navratri fasting. Made with gram flour, yoghurt, and mild spices, it is steamed to perfection and topped with a simple tempering.

Ingredients

1 cup rice ½ cup urad dal (split black gram) ½ cup yoghurt Salt to taste ½ tsp baking soda or Eno fruit salt For tempering: 1 tbsp oil, ½ tsp mustard seeds, 1 tsp sesame seeds, 1 chopped green chilli, curry leaves

Step 1

Wash and soak rice and urad dal separately for 6–7 hours.

Step 2

Grind them into a smooth batter, mix with yoghurt and salt, and leave to ferment overnight.

Step 3

Before steaming, add baking soda or fruit salt and mix gently.

Step 4

Pour batter into a greased steaming tray and steam for 15–20 minutes until set.

Step 5

Heat oil, add mustard seeds, sesame seeds, green chilli, and curry leaves, and pour tempering over dhokla.

Step 6

Cut into pieces and serve warm with green chutney.
