Mutton Stew And Appam: A Traditional Kerala Feast Worth Making At Home

A thick, coconut-based mutton-loaded rich gravy and a soft rice and coconut pancake to mop it up with; sounds like a food coma-inducing heavenly meal, right?

Ingredients

1kg mutton, washed and cleaned 1 tsp turmeric powder 1 tsp ginger paste 1 tsp salt 1.5 cups water 1.5 tbsp coconut oil 3 cloves 3 cardamom pods 1 cinnamon stick 2 green chillies 2 sprigs of curry leaves 1 large onion, sliced

Ingredients

1 tbsp ginger, julienned 1 carrot, diced 1 potato, diced 4 green beans, chopped 1 tsp salt 1.5 tsp black pepper powder 2 cups coconut milk

Step 1

In a bowl, add mutton, turmeric powder, ginger paste, salt, mix well and marinate for at least half an hour.

Step 2

Place the marinated mutton and water in a pressure cooker and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles.

Step 3

Heat coconut oil in a large wok.  Add the cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, green chillies and curry leaves.

Step 4

Once these ingredients stop spluttering after a minute, add the onions.

Step 5

Sauté the onions for 3-4 minutes, then add the carrots, potatoes, beans and stir fry for a minute.

Step 6

Now add the cooked mutton, salt, and pepper and cook for 10 minutes while covered. Add coconut milk and continue cooking.

Step 7

Serve the mutton stew hot with fresh appams.
