Moong dal payasam or halwa is a delight to prepare on special occasions and festivals. This South Indian dessert is rich in protein and boasts creaminess from coconut milk. Check out the recipe to replicate the dish at home.
¾ cup jaggery 1.5 cups water ½ cup moong dal ¾ cup thin coconut milk ¼ tsp dry ginger powder ½ tsp cardamom powder 10 cashews, raisins 2 tbsp ghee 2 tbsp coconut slices ¼ cup thick coconut milk
Dry roast moong dal in a pot until it releases aroma. Rinse the dal, add water, and pressure-cook it for 2 whistles.
Once pressure is released, mash the lentils.
Pour thin coconut milk into the cooker and bring the ingredients to a boil.
Add jaggery, cardamom powder, ginger powder, cashews, raisins, and other ingredients to the cooker.
After a gentle boil, pour thick milk. Cook for 3-4 minutes and turn off the heat.
Serve this delightful payasam to guests or refrigerate it and enjoy it for a couple of days.
