Pair your momos with the perfect spicy kick using this quick, full-flavoured momo chutney, prepared with tomatoes, chillies, garlic, and basic kitchen spices.
2 large tomatoes 6–8 dried red chillies 6–7 cloves of garlic ½ inch ginger 1 tbsp oil ½ tsp sugar ½ tsp salt 1 tbsp vinegar or lemon juice ¼ cup water (for boiling)
In a vessel, boil the tomatoes and dried red chillies until they turn soft. This makes it easier to blend them into a smooth chutney.
Let the boiled tomatoes cool down slightly. Peel the skin from the tomatoes for a smooth texture and richer flavour.
In a mixer jar, add boiled tomatoes, chillies, garlic, ginger, and salt to taste. Grind all these to make a coarse paste, ensuring everything mixes well.
In a pan, heat the oil and sauté the blended paste for about 2–3 minutes, allowing the flavours to deepen and the raw smell from the garlic and chillies to dissipate.
Once cooked, add sugar and vinegar, or lemon juice to balance the heat with tanginess while enhancing the taste of the chutney.
Simmer for 2 minutes, adjust the thickness if required with water. Let it cool completely and serve with warm, steamed momos.
