Culinary traditions often intersect with global pop culture in fascinating ways. The Milanesa Napolitana is deeply embedded in Argentine culinary history and has gained worldwide fame as the preferred comfort food of football legend Lionel Messi. This hearty dish is a masterclass in layering textures and rich flavours. It begins with a perfectly tenderised beef cutlet encased in a crispy breadcrumb shell. This golden base is then smothered in a robust tomato sauce, layered with savoury deli ham, and blanketed under a heavy layer of melting mozzarella cheese.
4 thin beef cutlets 2 large eggs, beaten 1.5 cups breadcrumbs 1/2 cup rich tomato sauce 4 slices deli ham 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese Oil for frying
Tenderise the beef cutlets gently with a meat mallet until they are uniform in thickness and season them thoroughly with salt and pepper.
Dip each seasoned cutlet into the beaten eggs and then coat them evenly in breadcrumbs to ensure a crispy exterior.
Fry the breaded cutlets in hot oil until they achieve a deep golden brown colour on both sides, then transfer them to a baking tray.
Spread a layer of tomato sauce over each fried cutlet and place a single slice of ham flat on top.
Cover the ham heavily with shredded mozzarella cheese and bake in a hot oven until the cheese is bubbling and melted completely.
