Sorshe Ilish is a cherished dish for many Bengalis during Kojagori Lakshmi Puja. This mustard-based Hilsa fish curry adds an authentic touch to your Lakshmi Puja celebration, filling your home with rich flavours.
6 pieces of Hilsa fish (around 1 kg) 1 tablespoon black mustard seed (soaked) 1 tablespoon yellow mustard seed (soaked) 3 green chillies ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon nigella seed (optional) 1 teaspoon turmeric powder 6 slit green chillies ½ teaspoon red chilli powder 3 tablespoons mustard oil
Make a thick paste of mustard seeds, green chillies, and salt. Strain the paste to remove the husk and set it aside.
Rub the fish pieces with salt and turmeric powder and keep aside.
Heat mustard oil in a deep pan and temper with nigella seeds.
Add the mustard paste, slit green chillies, red chilli powder, and water.
Add fish and cook on low flame for 10 minutes.
Uncover the pan, drizzle with raw mustard oil, and boil for 2-3 minutes before serving hot with steamed rice.
