Kohlapuri misal is a spicy and delicious Maharashtrian street food, topped with spicy gravy and served with soft, fresh pav. It is perfect for a quick snack and for those who have a high tolerance for spicy dishes. Here’s a step-by-step recipe:
For the Usal (Sprouts Curry): 1 cup mixed sprouts 1 finely chopped onion 1 finely chopped tomato 2-3 minced garlic cloves 1 grated ginger 2 slit green chillies 1 tsp mustard seeds 1/2 tsp turmeric powder 1 tsp red chilli powder 1 tsp Kolhapuri masala 2 tbsp oil For the Kat (Spicy Gravy): 2 sliced onions 1 chopped tomato 4-5 garlic cloves 1-inch ginger piece 2 tbsp grated dry coconut 2-3 dried red chillies 1 tbsp Kolhapuri masala 1 tsp red chilli powder 2 tbsp oil 1/2 tsp tamarind pulp
For Usal, saute mustard seeds, onion, garlic, spices, add sprouts and cook with water until tender.
For Kat, roast onions, tomatoes, coconut, chillies, then blend to a paste and cook with spices and water until it becomes thick.
Take a bowl, layer usal, top with kat, farsan, onions and coriander.
Serve with pav and lemon!
