The berry season is almost over, but if you store them properly, their shelf life can be increased. Because of their structure along with moisture, raspberries and strawberries need to be handled differently. If you treat all the berries the same, they will spoil faster and lose their flavour while they are in storage. Get to know useful hacks to enjoy the berries a little longer!
You shouldn't wash raspberries before putting them away because they soak up water quickly and go bad faster. If strawberries are dried well, they can be rinsed gently and are better able to handle light moisture.
To keep raspberries from getting crushed or mouldy, they need to be kept in shallow containers that let air flow through. Strawberries last longer in containers that are a little deeper because they are less likely to leak juice.
Raspberries are very sensitive to moisture and will go bad in a few days if they get wet. Strawberries are stronger and can handle humidity a little better.
Once you pick raspberries, they don't have any stems to protect the fruit. If you leave the green tops on strawberries until you eat them, they will last longer.
For the best freshness, eat raspberries within one to two days. If you keep strawberries dry and cool, they can stay fresh for a few days.
