Jowar Upma is a healthy, gluten-free dish made with sorghum grains, vegetables, and aromatic spices. Packed with fiber and nutrients, it’s a wholesome breakfast or light meal option. This hearty, flavorful dish is perfect for those seeking a nutritious twist on traditional upma.
1 cup jowar (sorghum) grains or broken jowar 1 tbsp oil 1 tsp mustard seeds 1 tsp cumin seeds 1-2 green chilies 1 medium onion 1/2 cup mixed vegetables (carrot, peas, beans) 1/2 tsp turmeric powder 2 cups water Salt to taste Fresh coriander Lemon juice
Soak jowar grains overnight if using whole grains. If using broken jowar, rinse and set aside.
Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
Add cumin seeds, green chilies, and chopped onions. Sauté until onions turn translucent.
Stir in mixed vegetables and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add turmeric powder and salt. Mix well.
Add jowar and stir to combine. Pour in 2 cups of water.
Cover and cook on low heat, stirring occasionally, until jowar is soft and water is absorbed . Garnish with fresh coriander and a squeeze of lemon juice for added flavour.
