Jalebi Recipe: How Our Grandmothers Made It the Traditional Way

Crispy, golden swirls soaked in fragrant sugar syrup, jalebi is India’s favourite festive sweet. Simple to make at home, it’s the perfect dessert for celebrations, adding warmth and sweetness to every occasion.

Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour 2 tbsp cornflour ½ tsp turmeric or yellow food colour ¾ cup water (adjust as needed) ½ tsp yeast (optional for quick ferment) Oil or ghee for frying For Sugar Syrup: 1 cup sugar ½ cup water ¼ tsp cardamom powder Few saffron strands

Step 1

Mix flour, cornflour, and food colour with water to form a smooth batter, then let it rest for 6-8 hours or 30 minutes with yeast

Step 2

Prepare the sugar syrup by boiling sugar and water until it turns sticky, then add saffron and cardamom

Step 3

Pour batter into a piping bag or squeeze bottle.

Step 4

Pipe spirals into medium-hot oil, fry till crisp and golden.

Step 5

Dip hot jalebis in warm syrup for 1-2 minutes, then serve.
