A true Irish Coffee is a flawless study in temperature and texture, balancing a robust, piping hot black coffee base with a chilled layer of velvety, softly whipped cream. Far from a casual spiked beverage, this traditional recipe relies on smooth Irish whiskey and rich brown sugar to create an incredibly well-rounded flavour profile. The secret to perfection lies in pouring the cream gently over the back of a warm spoon, ensuring it floats effortlessly on top so every sip is drawn through a cold, silky cloud.
1 cup freshly brewed hot filter coffee 45ml smooth Irish whiskey 1-2 tsp soft brown sugar 1/4 cup heavy double cream, chilled A pinch of fresh nutmeg for garnish
Pour hot water into your serving glass to warm it thoroughly for 1 minute, then discard the water before starting the build.
Pour the freshly brewed hot coffee directly into the pre-warmed glass until it is about two-thirds full, then add the brown sugar, stirring vigorously until the crystals are completely dissolved.
Stir the Irish whiskey into the sweetened coffee base until fully incorporated, then set the hot mixture aside for a brief moment.
Whip the chilled double cream just until it begins to thicken but remains pourable, then gently pour it over the back of a spoon onto the coffee surface so it floats in a thick, silky layer.
