Everyone loves a good chocolate chip cookie, and the softer they are, the better. Soft chocolate chip cookies depend on butter temperature, sugar balance, and resting time. Chilling the dough helps control spread and improves texture, giving crisp edges and a soft centre.

Ingredients

½ cup unsalted butter, softened ½ cup brown sugar ¼ cup white sugar 1 egg 1 tsp vanilla extract 1¼ cups all-purpose flour ½ tsp baking soda ¼ tsp salt ¾ cup chocolate chips

Step 1

Cream butter and sugars until light, then add egg and vanilla.

Step 2

Mix flour, baking soda and salt separately, then fold into the dough.

Step 3

Stir in chocolate chips and chill dough for 30 minutes.

Step 4

Scoop onto a lined tray and bake at 180°C for 10–12 minutes.

Step 5

Cool on the tray before serving.
