This chia buttermilk recipe gives the classic Indian chaas a modern, nutrient-dense upgrade. Infusing traditional spiced buttermilk with swollen chia seeds adds a wonderful texture alongside a power-packed dose of omega-3 fatty acids and dietary fibre. Flavoured with roasted cumin, green chilli, and fresh mint, it makes an exceptionally cooling and digestive beverage for warm afternoons or post-workout hydration.
2 cups plain yoghurt (curd), chilled 1.5 cups chilled water 1 tablespoon chia seeds, soaked in 1/4 cup water for 15 minutes 1/2 teaspoon roasted cumin powder 1 green chilli, finely minced 1/2 teaspoon black salt or rock salt 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh mint leaves Fresh coriander for garnish
Whisk the chilled yoghurt, water, roasted cumin powder, minced green chilli, and black salt together in a pitcher until smooth and frothy.
Stir the soaked, gelled chia seeds into the whisked buttermilk until evenly distributed throughout the drink.
Pour the mixture into tall serving glasses over ice cubes if desired.
Garnish with finely chopped mint and fresh coriander leaves, and serve chilled.
