Following the recent crackdown by the FSSAI on eggs containing traces of banned antibiotics including nitrofurans in the protein, the scrutiny on egg production has been tightened further. Test your batch at home using a few simple tips that might help identify and avoid the consumption of a low quality product.
When looked at closely, real eggshells will have a slightly grainy surface compared to the smooth, blemish-free one on fake eggs.
Place a piece of eggshell in vinegar to see it bubble and dissolve gradually if it is genuine.
Break open an egg to check the yolk—if the yolk breaks easily or spreads too quickly, it is advisable to throw away the batch.
Adulterated eggs might have a chemical or sulfur-like odour whereas natural eggs have a mild or neutral one.
Cook the whites to check if they coagulate and turn opaque like a real one would or remain jelly-like and rubbery if adulterated.
