Nariyal or coconut chutney is a South Indian staple without which no plate of idli, dosa, or vada is complete. If you’re a beginner, here’s an easy step-wise guide to make coconut chutney at home.
1 cup grated coconut 2 tbsp chana dal 2 green chillies 1 small piece of ginger ½ tsp cumin seeds Salt to taste ½ cup water For the tempering: 1 tsp oil ½ tsp mustard seeds 1 dried red chilli 6–8 curry leaves ¼ tsp urad dal (optional)
Add grated coconut, roasted chana dal, green chillies, ginger, cumin seeds, and salt to a grinder.
Add some water, and blend till you get a smooth texture. Transfer to a bowl.
Heat some oil and temper mustard seeds, urad dal, dried red chillies, and curry leaves.
Add the tempering to the bowl of coconut chutney and add to your South Indian spread.
