Bread halwa is a dessert that reinvents the traditional halwa recipe by turning whole wheat or white bread into its core ingredient. Made from the simplest of ingredients like milk, sugar and ghee, bread halwa is nonetheless a very luxurious and creamy dessert. Find its recipe here!
4 - 5 slices of bread ¼ cup sugar or, as preferred 1 ½ cups milk 1 tbsp raisins 8-10 cashews ½ tsp cardamom powder 5-6 saffron strands, optional Oil or ghee for frying
In a thick-bottomed kadhai, add ghee. Keep the flame on medium to low heat.
Add cashews and stir them lightly until they turn golden. Remove the fried cashews from the kadhai and set them aside.
In the same kadhai, add raisins and fry them until they swell. Remove the raisins and keep aside.
Remove the crusts from the bread and slice them into cubes. In the same kadhai, add the bread cubes and roast them in ghee.
Stir continuously and flip the cubes until they turn lightly golden uniformly, on all sides. Add sugar to the kadhai. Keep the flame on medium to low heat.
Sprinkle cardamom powder and saffron strands into the mixture. Stir and simmer on a low flame as the bread and milk come together and start thickening.
Add a spoonful of ghee. Stir until the ghee is completely absorbed. Garnish with dry fruits and serve.
