Hot cross buns are not just bread; they are traditional, sweet, spiced buns marked with a cross and are often enjoyed during Easter. They are soft, lightly glazed and taste heavenly when toasted with butter.
3 ½ cups all-purpose flour ¼ cup sugar 1 packet active dry yeast 1 tsp cinnamon ½ tsp nutmeg ¾ cup warm milk 1 large egg 4 tbsp melted butter ½ cup raisins ½ cup flour for the cross paste 2 tbsp sugar or apricot jam, for glaze
Mix all the dry ingredients with milk, egg, and butter. Knead until it turns smooth.
Fold in dry fruits, cover it and let it rise for 1 hour.
Form 12 balls, place them on a clean tray, and let them rise for 30 minutes.
Mix flour and water to form a paste and pipe crosses on top of the buns.
Bake the balls at 375°C for 20-25 minutes.
Glaze it with warm sugar or apricot glaze and serve!
