Preparing breakfast at home allows complete control over sugar intake, especially for young children. This homemade granola relies on mashed ripe bananas and unsweetened apple sauce for natural sweetness, skipping refined sugars and syrups completely. Rolled oats, seeds, and a touch of cinnamon are baked until crisp, creating a delightful texture that pairs well with milk or yoghurt. It keeps well in an airtight container for weeks, making it an easy option for busy mornings or after-school snacking.

Ingredients

2 cups rolled oats 1 large ripe banana, thoroughly mashed 1/2 cup unsweetened apple sauce 2 tablespoons melted coconut oil or butter 1/4 cup sunflower or pumpkin seeds 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder 1/4 cup dried raisins or cranberries

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 160 degrees Celsius and line a baking sheet with baking paper.

Step 2

Mix the rolled oats, seeds, and cinnamon powder together in a large bowl.

Step 3

Whisk the mashed banana, unsweetened apple sauce, and melted coconut oil in a separate bowl, then combine thoroughly with the dry oat mixture.

Step 4

Spread the mixture evenly onto the prepared baking sheet and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, stirring halfway through, until crisp and golden before folding in the dried fruit.
