Comforting Gujarati dal simmered with tamarind and jaggery, cooked with soft whole wheat dhokli pieces. A wholesome, tangy, and mildly spiced one-pot meal, ideal for lunch or dinner, full of warmth and homely flavours.
1 cup toor dal ½ tsp turmeric 2 cups water Salt to taste 1-2 tsp jaggery (optional) 1-2 tsp tamarind paste For dhokli: 1 cup whole wheat flour, pinch of salt, water to knead Tempering: 1 tsp mustard seeds 1 tsp cumin seeds 1 pinch hing (asafoetida) 2-3 dried red chillies 1 tsp oil
Cook dal with turmeric and water until soft, and mash lightly.
Knead the dough, roll it thin, and cut into diamond-shaped pieces.
Boil dal, add dhokli pieces gradually and cook for 10-15 mins.
Mix in tamarind paste, jaggery, salt, and let it simmer for 5 mins.
Heat oil, add mustard seeds, cumin, red chillies, hing and pour it over dal. Serve hot.
