Inspired by German-style baking traditions popularised in the United States, hot dog buns combine milk, butter, sugar, and yeast into soft golden rolls with fluffy centres, delicate sweetness, and the nostalgic aroma of bakery-fresh comfort food.
3 cups flour 2 tablespoons sugar 1 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons instant yeast 3/4 cup warm milk 2 tablespoons melted butter 1 egg 1/4 cup warm water Butter for brushing
Mix flour, sugar, salt, yeast, milk, butter, egg, and water into a soft, smooth dough.
Knead until elastic, then cover and let the dough rise until doubled in size.
Divide the dough into equal portions and shape into long bun rolls.
Arrange on a tray, proof again, then bake until golden, soft, and lightly glossy on top.
Brush with butter and cool slightly before filling with sausages or favourite toppings.
