Thatte idli is a popular breakfast dish from Karnataka's coastal region. These idlis are made on a flat plate and are larger, thinner, and incredibly soft.
¼ cup flattened rice 1 cup coarse sooji or rava Salt to taste ½ cup curd 1 cup water 1 tsp fruit salt Ghee, as needed Podi powder Banana leaf
Place the flattened rice in a blender jar and mix until coarsely powdered. Add the rava and salt, and stir thoroughly.
Add the curd and stir thoroughly. Add water and let the batter sit for about 15-20 minutes.
Add water to adjust the consistency and stir thoroughly. Line a small deep dish with a banana leaf and pour the batter into it.
Spread the batter slightly and steam the idlis in a steamer or cooker over medium heat for 15 minutes.
Turn off the gas and leave the idlis be in the steamer for another 5 minutes. Take the idlis out and allow them to cool.
Combine fruit salt and water and stir vigorously. Loosen the edges with a spoon or knife and remove the idlis.
Spread ghee on the idlis and serve with podi powder.
