Easy No-Ferment Thatte Idli, Karnataka-Style For A Speedy Weekend Breakfast

Thatte idli is a popular breakfast dish from Karnataka's coastal region. These idlis are made on a flat plate and are larger, thinner, and incredibly soft.

Ingredients

¼ cup flattened rice 1 cup coarse sooji or rava Salt to taste ½ cup curd 1 cup water 1 tsp fruit salt Ghee, as needed Podi powder Banana leaf

Step 1

Place the flattened rice in a blender jar and mix until coarsely powdered. Add the rava and salt, and stir thoroughly.

Step 2

Add the curd and stir thoroughly. Add water and let the batter sit for about 15-20 minutes.

Step 3

Add water to adjust the consistency and stir thoroughly. Line a small deep dish with a banana leaf and pour the batter into it.

Step 4

Spread the batter slightly and steam the idlis in a steamer or cooker over medium heat for 15 minutes.

Step 5

Turn off the gas and leave the idlis be in the steamer for another 5 minutes. Take the idlis out and allow them to cool.

Step 6

Combine fruit salt and water and stir vigorously. Loosen the edges with a spoon or knife and remove the idlis.

Step 7

Spread ghee on the idlis and serve with podi powder.
