Gur Aate Ka Halwa is a traditional North Indian dessert prepared during festive auspicious occasions and religious offerings. Made with whole wheat flour roasted in rich desi ghee and sweetened naturally with organic jaggery (gur), this halwa is deeply aromatic, wholesome, and unrefined. Prepared as a sacred prasad offering for Dhanteras 2026, it is laced with green cardamom powder and garnished with slivered almonds and cashew nuts for a festive touch.
1 cup whole wheat flour (atta) 3/4 cup pure desi ghee 1 cup organic jaggery (gur), grated or powdered 2.5 cups water 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder 2 tablespoons sliced almonds and cashews
Combine the grated jaggery and water in a pan, heating over medium flame until the jaggery dissolves completely into a smooth warm syrup, then strain to remove impurities and keep warm.
Heat the desi ghee in a thick-bottomed pan, add the whole wheat flour, and roast slowly on low heat for ten to twelve minutes until the flour turns a rich reddish-brown shade and smells delightfully fragrant.
Lower the heat and carefully pour the warm jaggery syrup into the roasted flour in small increments, stirring briskly and continuously to ensure a completely smooth, lump-free consistency.
Sprinkle in the cardamom powder along with half of the sliced almonds and cashews, stirring for two to three minutes as the halwa absorbs the syrup, leaves the pan edges, and glisten with ghee before serving warm as holy prasad.
