Dal dhokli is a traditional Gujarati dish where wheat flour dumplings cook directly in a spiced lentil base, making it both protein-rich and filling. It is traditionally prepared as a one-pot meal during winter, when slow-simmered dishes are preferred. The combination of toor dal and wheat provides sustained nourishment and warmth.
1 cup toor dal, cooked and mashed ¾ cup wheat flour ½ tsp turmeric ½ tsp red chilli powder 1 tsp jaggery 1 tbsp lemon juice Salt to taste 1 tsp mustard seeds 1 tsp cumin seeds 1 tbsp ghee or oil Curry leaves
Knead wheat flour with salt and water into a firm dough, roll thin and cut into diamond-shaped pieces.
Bring cooked dal to a simmer with turmeric, chilli powder, jaggery and salt.
Add dhokli pieces and cook until they float and soften, stirring gently.
Finish with tempering of mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves and ghee, then add lemon juice and serve hot.
