Non-alcoholic drinks often end up as juice poured into a glass, but Christmas tables deserve better than that. A good alcohol-free drink should still feel layered, considered and appropriate for the occasion, especially when it is being served alongside festive food and cocktails. These drinks are built using the same logic as cocktails, with attention to temperature, balance, garnish and presentation.
Heat apple juice gently with cinnamon sticks, cloves and orange peel until fragrant. Strain before serving and pour hot into mugs or heatproof glasses. Garnish with a cinnamon stick or apple slice.
Fill a glass with ice, pour cranberry juice halfway, then top with sparkling water or soda. Add a splash of fresh orange juice and stir gently. Finish with fresh cranberries or an orange twist.
Mix fresh lime juice with ginger syrup in a glass. Add ice and top with soda water. Stir once and garnish with a slice of ginger or lime.
Combine pomegranate juice with crushed mint leaves and ice. Top with chilled water or soda. Serve immediately to keep the flavour bright.
Stir chilled almond milk with vanilla extract and a little sugar syrup. Serve over ice in short glasses. Grate a little nutmeg on top before serving.
