This chocolate and cherry Christmas pudding is a richer, modern version of the traditional steamed dessert. Dark cocoa and chopped chocolate add depth, while dried cherries bring gentle sharpness that balances the sweetness. Like all good Christmas puddings, it benefits from resting, allowing the flavours to deepen over time. Serve it warm with custard or cream for a classic finish.
1 cup dried cherries ½ cup raisins or sultanas ½ cup dark chocolate, chopped ½ cup flour ½ cup fresh breadcrumbs ½ cup brown sugar ¼ cup cocoa powder 100 g butter, melted 2 eggs ½ tsp mixed spice Milk, as needed
Soak dried cherries and raisins in hot water for about 30 minutes, then drain well.
In a large bowl, mix flour, breadcrumbs, cocoa powder, sugar and mixed spice, then stir in melted butter and eggs.
Fold in the soaked fruit and chopped chocolate, adding a little milk if the mixture feels very thick.
Spoon into a greased pudding basin, cover and steam gently for 3–4 hours until firm.
Serve once cool and garnish with fresh cherries.
