French toast is a comfort breakfast which is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. This easy café-style recipe changes simple bread and eggs into a warm start to your day.
4 slices of bread 2 eggs ½ cup milk 1 tbsp sugar or honey ¼ tsp cinnamon powder ½ tsp vanilla essence 1 tbsp butter (for frying) A pinch of salt As needed, maple syrup or honey (to serve)
In a bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla essence, and salt to make a smooth custard-like consistency that coats the slices of bread evenly.
In a pan, melt butter gently, ensuring that it coats the surface without browning.
Dip every slice of bread into the egg mixture, soaking from both sides so that it absorbs flavour without turning soggy.
Place the soaked bread on the hot pan and cook slowly, letting the base turn golden and a little crisp.
Flip it carefully and cook from both sides until it turns evenly browned, and cooked through with a soft centre.
Serve it hot with maple syrup, honey, or fresh fruit on top. Dust it lightly with sugar or cinnamon to get that café-style finish.
