A truly excellent pizza relies entirely on the quality of its foundational elements. While store bought jars offer convenience, making your own tomato base from scratch completely elevates the final dish. This homemade pizza sauce focuses on the integrity of fresh ingredients and simple Italian cooking principles. By simmering high-quality crushed tomatoes with fragrant garlic and dried oregano, the sauce develops a deep, savoury profile that simply cannot be replicated by commercial alternatives.
1 can crushed tomatoes (400g) 2 cloves garlic, finely minced 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp dried oregano A handful of fresh basil leaves
Heat the olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat and gently sauté the minced garlic for one minute until it becomes highly aromatic.
Pour the crushed tomatoes into the pan, add the dried oregano and a pinch of salt, and stir well to combine the flavours.
Let the sauce simmer gently for fifteen minutes so it thickens beautifully, then stir in torn fresh basil leaves just before removing the pan from the heat.
