As monsoon has arrived early in several parts of India, lychee is making its way into the farmer’s market. The perishable item has a short shelf life, so here are a few tips to store it and prevent spoilage.
Unlike most fruits, you don’t have to wash lychee unless you are ready to eat them. Excess moisture can ruin lychees quickly.
Instead of leaving the bunch out on a table, refrigerate the fruit. Low temperatures keep the pulp of lychees firm and juicy.
Peel the shell of lychee only when you are ready to eat. If you remove it and refrigerate it, the fruit will go bad quickly.
It is better to eat the ripped lychees before the bright ones. The ones with red or pink skin, firm pulp, and floral aroma should be attacked first.
Don’t use airtight containers to store lychees. Instead, use a breathable bag to keep the bunch in the refrigerator.
Don’t forget to inspect the produce every day. It is essential to keep a check on lychee so you know when they can expire and when you must consume them.
Lychees tend to lose moisture quite quickly, hence, maintaining humidity is the key to keeping them fresh for a long time.
