Okra is popularly consumed in India. It is paired with paratha, dal-roti, and dal chawal. But instead of purchasing it from outside, you can grow bhindi on your balcony. Check out these tips to enjoy the harvest.
Choose a desi variety of bhindi and sow the seeds in June-July. Humidity during the monsoon will reap a good harvest.
Expose the plant to direct sunlight for 6-8 hours. Lack of sunlight will leave plants leggy, and you will have only a few pods for harvest.
You cannot grow okra in small pots. Use large pots with a 12-15 inch diameter and 18-20 inch depth. Make holes for drainage.
The soil should comprise garden soil (50%), compost (30%), and coco-peat (20%). Keep it slightly acidic.
Avoid overwatering the plant. If the weather is hot, water it twice a day and reduce it to once in two days during monsoon.
You will need to feed the plant a lot of fertilizer, probably every 15 days. Use a balance of organic compost and liquid fertilizer.
The first harvest should be ready in 50-70 days after sowing. Pick bhindi sticks every 1-2 days as they mature and enjoy them.
