Pre-monsoon in North India is an ideal time to grow tomatoes. They thrive in humidity, and when the plant is blossoming, the rainy season will help it flourish better. Here are a few tips to grow the fruit at home.
The produce will depend on the variety you select. It is better to pick heat-tolerant ones. You can also start with cherry tomatoes.
Tomato plants need sunlight for 6-8 hours. The sunniest spot on your balcony will be the best for the fruit and allow the plant to grow strong.
Don’t use a small pot to grow tomatoes. A large pot will allow the plant to grow and roots to develop depth. It will prevent root rot.
For tomatoes, there should be a good mix of garden soil, vermicompost, and some coco-peat. You can also add sand for water drainage.
Tomatoes need a lot of water to grow. If the weather is hot, you must water twice a day. During monsoon, add water only when the surface of the soil is dry.
Since tomatoes are heavy fruits, the plant will need support. Cages can be helpful. In some cases, pruning might also help.
Tomatoes grow swiftly, therefore, adding fertilisers to soil is essential. You should also be cautious about pest control.
