On August 12, 2025, an order was passed in Delhi, according to which lakhs of stray dogs will be captured, neutered, and kept in animal shelters that are in a dismal state because they are underfunded. If you are an animal lover looking to adopt, this is the right time, but educate yourself about what not to feed your furry friend.

Chocolates

Irrespective of what kind of a pet parent you are, chocolates are a big ‘no-no’ for every animal. They can disrupt their digestive system and leave them in a state of stress.

Garlic & Onions

You should not feed garlic, chives, and onions to dogs because these items can damage red blood cells and cause anaemia in the animal.

Grapes & Raisins

There is a compound in raisins and grapes which is toxic for dogs and can leave them with kidney failure, along with lethargy, vomiting, and lack of appetite.

Avocado

Avocado and its pit, leaves, and bark have persin, a substance that is toxic for birds and horses. It can leave your furry friend with diarrhoea and vomiting.

Alcohol

No animal should be fed alcohol or alcoholic foods and beverages. It can drastically impact their health and cause vomiting, tremors, and whatnot.

Dairy Products

Most animals, including dogs and rabbits, should not be given dairy products or milk. They are lactose intolerant and might suffer from vomiting and diarrhoea.

Salty, Fatty Foods

Foods that are loaded with salt and fat can leave the animal experiencing vomiting, diarrhoea, tremors, seizures, inflammation, pain, and pancreatitis.
