This summer, the best way to steer away from greasy, fried or oily meals is to consider steamed, airy foods which are easily digestible. Some of the most common steamed foods are easy to make and are terrifically delicious and hearty. These are the steamed comfort foods you should check out this summer.

Idli

These soft, fluffy cakes are made from a fermented batter of rice and urad dal (black gram). The batter is poured into special idli molds and steamed until they rise and become light. Idlis are often served with coconut chutney and sambar.

Dhokla

Made from fermented rice and chickpea batter, dhokla is steamed until fluffy and then tempered with mustard seeds, curry leaves, and green chilies. It’s typically served with coriander chutney and is known for its spongy texture and tangy taste.

Patra

A unique Gujarati dish made from colocasia leaves (taro leaves) which are spread with a spiced besan paste, rolled up, and then steamed. Once steamed, the rolls are sliced and often tempered with mustard seeds and sesame seeds.

Puttu

The traditional breakfast dish from Kerala consists of layers of ground rice and grated coconut steamed in cylindrical molds. Puttu is typically served with kadala curry (black chickpea curry) or banana and sugar. The combination of the soft, grainy texture of puttu with the rich, spiced curry makes it a comforting and hearty meal.

Momo

These steamed dumplings that originated in Tibet have become extremely popular across India. They are made from flour dough and can be filled with a variety of ingredients, including vegetables, chicken, or pork. Momos are often served with a spicy tomato-based dipping sauce.

Patholi

The traditional dish from the Konkan region, particularly Goa consists of rice flour batter spread on turmeric leaves, filled with a mixture of grated coconut and jaggery, and then folded and steamed. The turmeric leaves impart a unique aroma to the dish.
