Storing onions properly helps prolong their shelf life and keeps them fresh for months. Keeping onions fresh for a long duration requires proper handling and storing conditions. Here are some tried and tested tips used in Indian households for proper storage.
Use firm, dry onions without any bruises or soft spots.
Cure freshly harvested onions by letting them dry in a well-ventilated, shady area for 2-3 weeks, the outer skin should feel papery.
Keep onions in a less humid place to prevent rotting and sprouting, with an ideal temperature of 0°C-7°C
Use mesh bags and baskets for storage, and avoid plastic bags as they trap moisture.
Do not store the onions with potatoes, as they both release moisture and gases, which cause spoilage.
Inspect the onions, and remove any spoiled ones to prevent them from affecting the others.
