Batata vada is a very popular fried snack prepared from potatoes. 'Batata' means potato and 'Vada' means fritters. Batatvada is a popular street food across India. In south India it's known as 'Aloo bonda'. Basically batata vada is from Maharastrian cuisine, though it is very popular in Gujarat too. In Gujarat, batata vada is prepared little differently from Maharastrian Batata vada. Here is Batata vada recipe from Maharastra. It is also known as Khpoli vada and used in making vada pau.

Ingredients for Batata Vada Recipe

  • 1.50 Pieces potatoes
  • 1/4 Tbsp oil
  • 0.13 Tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/4 Tbsp green chilli paste
  • 1/4 Tsp grated ginger
  • 1/4 Tsp grated garlic (optional)
  • A Stalk curry leaves
  • 1/4 Tsp turmeric powder
  • A Pinch Pinch of asafoetida
  • 0.06 Cup finely chopped coriander
  • 0.13 Tsp lemon juice
  • To Taste Salt
  • As Required For batter
  • 1/4 Cup gram flour
  • 1/4 Tsp red chilli powder
  • 0.06 Tsp turmeric powder
  • A Pinch Pinch of asafoetida
  • To Taste Salt
  • As Required Oil for frying

Directions: Batata Vada Recipe

  • STEP 1.1. Wash and boil potatoes, peel and roughly mash them.
  • STEP 2.2. For potato stuffing, heat oil and add mustard seeds, once they splutter, add curry leaves, ginger, garlic, chilli paste and sauté for few seconds.
  • STEP 3.3. Further add turmeric powder, asafoetida , mix and sauté for a couple of seconds.
  • STEP 4.4. Add mashed potatoes, salt, mix well and sauté for 1-2 minutes.
  • STEP 5.5. Lastly add coriander and lemon juice. Mix and switch off the flame.
  • STEP 6.6. Once it cools down, prepare lemon size balls out of it.
  • STEP 7.7. Prepare medium thick and lumpfree batter by adding all spices to gram flour, with water.
  • STEP 8.8. Heat oil for frying, add one tbsp hot oil in prepared batter, mix well. Dip prepared balls in batter and deep fry it from all sides on medium flame till it become golden.
  • STEP 9.9. Serve hot.
