When it comes to losing weight, everyone looks for an easy and quick option and that’s when the “fad diet” comes into the picture. Fad diets promise to give rapid results to lose weight.
Fad diets are a form of diet that prohibits people from eating certain foods, such as plants or dairy products. This often deprives your body of the wide range of nutrients it needs for good health.
Some of the popular fad diets: Keto diet, paleo diet, gluten-free and fat-free diet are not suitable for all ages. The success of any fad diet depends on a number of factors, including age, gender, weight, physical activity, genetics and health status.
In the long run, a fad diet is very difficult to follow and usually leads to weight gain and other health issues. A fad diet is not unhealthy but those who go to an extreme level in adhering to the diet may face dangerous results.
Why do people who follow fad diets end up gaining weight?
Most fad diets focus on very low consumption of carbs. However, when you follow a low-carb diet, the body begins to break down muscle tissue to meet the necessary energy needs. This collapse of muscle tissue results in a decrease in metabolic rate, so when the diet stops, the body gets heavier which leads to body fat.
Hence, fad diets are not sustainable. You may lose some weight initially in a few days/weeks, but you probably gain everything right after the diet.
Significant weight loss requires time and is a long-term commitment. After all, weight loss does not happen overnight. It will probably take you a while to get in shape after investing in a healthy diet. An ideal diet is one that helps you achieve and maintain a healthier weight.
